Clasps
Sandy Paluzzi
The Bead Peddler®
There are several varieties of clasps. The most basic and cheapest
clasp is a spring ring. While spring rings definitely work, they
don't add much to the look of the design.
Probably the most widely
used clasp is a lobster claw. It's fairly easy to close, secure, and
mid range in price. I frequently use lobsters, particularly on
necklaces where I hook the lobster onto an extension chain.
If you want a clasp that will add to the design and become a statement in
itself, try a toggle. The right toggle clasp can be used as a
centerpiece in a necklace. When you buy a toggle, make sure the bar
is quite a bit longer than the toggle or your clasp will become undone.
I
The spring ring, lobster claw and toggle are the usual choices for use
with beading wire. However, they are not your only choices.
There are also specialty clasps for different materials such as a Greek
clasp for leather and rubber.
A barrel clasp to me is reminiscent of days gone by. While they are
still available, they are mainly made in plate. They are not
very popular, partly because it takes a long time to secure them.
However, once closed, they are very secure.
The newest invention in clasps is the magnetic clasp. Some of these
clasps work better than others. Ask for a demonstration of a
magnetic clasp before you buy it. If that's not possible, buy a very
small quantity until you find a brand that works for the heft of your
jewelry pieces. I feel I must inject a word of warning when working
with magnetic clasps - magnets loose their pull over time, so what works
today may not work tomorrow.
