Copper and Moonstone Modern Pendant

by Carol Ladine Lagoski http://www.creationsbycarolladine.com

SUPPLIES:

18” - 18 gauge round copper wire

6” - 20 gauge half round copper wire

  4 - 8mm round Moonstone beads

OPPTIONS:

Use square wire in place of the round. Just make sure wire fits your bead holes.

You may also opt for Sterling, Brass or Gold Fill wire and use any gemstone 8mm beads you like.

TOOLS:

Low tack tape (painters)

Fine tip sharpie

Flush cutters

Flat nose pliers

Round nose pliers

STEP 1:

Cut your 18” wire into:

1 - 8” piece

1 - 6” piece

1 - 4” piece

Mark the center of each with your sharpie.  Align marks and tape each end to hold.

(See small insert.  Bad picture but you get the idea)

STEP 2:

Take your half round wire and using your flat nose pliers place right about in the middle and bend your wire over as shown.  Place over the marks on your bundle and begin wrapping.

STEP 3:

Make a total of about eight wraps, four on either side of your mark.

STEP 4:

Clip ends making sure they finish on the same side of your bundle.  Tighten the wrap wires with your flat nose pliers.

STEP 5:

Remove the tape.  Hold your bundle between your thumb and forefinger and push the ends of your shortest wires up and towards each other.  You want these perpendicular to the narrow edge of bundle.

STEP 6:

Now place one bead on each of these upright wires.

STEP 7:

Take the ends of these two wires and cross them over each other just about a half inch up from your beads.  This spacing doesn’t have to be exact.

STEP 8:

Now bring up each side of your next wire.  Bring these under the first wires.

STEP 9:

Snug these wires close to your beads and the ones that are standing straight up.

STEP 10:

Now carefully bend one beaded wire over and around the outer wire…

STEP 11:

Now do the same with the beaded wire on the other side.

STEP 12:

Clip excess wire and snug these connections using your flat nose pliers.

STEP 13:

Now gently curve your final wire ends upward in a pleasing shape…

STEP 14:

Place one bead onto each of your middle of secondary wires.  Bend the ends outwards just above the beads.

STEP 15:

Repeat steps 11 and 12 with these wire ends.

STEP 16:

Measure up from that connection about an inch and bend these wires outward just a bit.

STEP 17:

Take your flat nose pliers and bend one of these upper wires outward so it is straight out to the side of your piece.

STEP 18:

Bring this wire around right at the bend of the other wire.

STEP 19:

Make a couple of wraps and clip excess.  Just make sure the cut end is on the back side (not on the front like I did).

STEP 20:

Take your remaining upright wire and your round nose pliers and make a loop for your bail.

STEP 21:

Wind the end around a couple of times and clip off excess (again, on the back side of your pendant).

Shown above is the completed pendant.  This looks great on a leather cord and is a nice casual pendant for daily wear.

Use your imagination and tweak the design for more variation.

Shown below is first one I ever made.  This is just to show a little different design.  At the top the two outer wires were twisted around one another a couple of times then a simple loop made on the ends.  Then I made a simple S link chain to attach to it.
