Brighten
November By Bethany Waldrop Keiper "No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees; No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds --November!" -- Thomas Hood, English poet November gets a bad rap for being drippy with rain and drab with gray clouds. Even though it is still autumn, the clear skies and hazy sunshine of late September and mid-October seem to have already taken the rest of the year off.But November can be as colorful as you want it to be. Your beaded designs can be the source of that color. As I mentioned in the September column, fish beads are not the first thing that comes to mind during the fall season. But, fish beads are a great way to bring large splashes of brilliant autumn color and pretty goldstone details into your designs.
This year, the fashionable colors seem to be whatever you would like them to be. Most fashioniados report that this season is a great time to try different colors and focus on special pieces. This cobalt and rich topaz design is a study in depth. Its contrasts of cool water and hot coffee make it an eye-catching accessory. Antique gold corrugated bicones add space and shine to the piece without detracting from the focal beads and firepolished beads. One of the best parts of cool weather is stopping in to a cafe and ordering a cup of something rich and warm. So, it is no wonder that the fall colors of coffee, cocoa and expresso are so popular. Of course, we can't forget a hot cup of tea, and the requisite honey to soothe the throat and the tastebuds. These lampworked honey-eye beads find their perfect rich match in amber fancy fish beads. The opaque white druks provide the milk and sugar for your cup of tea.
A dash of color can help warm up your cold weather ensembles, and may even help lift your spirits. Fortunately, you can use bright colors in your designs and still stay within the preferred colors for the season.
These "Plain" fish beads are anything but in this rich, warm, combination. This blend of fish beads with peridot matte druks, shiny topaz druks, and buttery-colored tri-ovals have almost all the colors of a fall forest before the leaves have all "fallen." Try using a thicker, flexible beading wire for stringing these beads, and turn a loop at each end to hold a clasp. The emerald green of these fancy fish beads is great not only for fall, but also for pretty Christmas ensembles. Then, a few months into the new year, these green fish-shaped and glitter-core beads match the varying shades of fresh springtime grass. Shining gold accents match the glitter of the beads and add a festive touch year ‘round.
