Follow new color trends for spring

 By Bethany Waldrop Keiper

"It's spring fever... You don't quite know what it is you DO want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!" -- Mark Twain

Spring is definitely here, as the flowers everywhere (and subsequent pollen) are sure to remind you. So it is time to get serious about your color choices for spring and summer fashion accents. One place that has long been known as *the* place to go for color information is Pantone.

For more than a decade, Pantone has been reporting the new, popular colors and trends for each season. To do this, every year they survey the designers during New York's Fashion Week. So this month we will be looking at the colors "Silver Peony, Grapemist, Cafe Creme and Hollyhock" from Pantone's sketchbook.

One of the things that stands out the most about these colors is the contrast. Two are soft and gentle, while the other two are strong and bright. These colors show that it can be the differences in life that make it beautiful and make it interesting.

Our first color finds its home in the subtle softness of pearls. Warm "Cafe Creme" colored pearls, with their cafe au lait richness, are perfect for combining with other lustrous colors.

In this design, the creamy tan pearls alternate with shining white pearls to flank larger, deep, dusty rose orbs. The effect of the design is one of a glow that draws attention to the wearer's skin more than to the beads themselves.

From understated to outspoken -- the color seems to shout out from these beads. This vibrant purple, "Hollyhock", is a gorgeous bead in bloom. For a shade this bright, a simple layering with silver or gold accents is all you need for a shining style. Tiny bead caps at the very top and bottom of your design help keep the beads in place and also add a polished, finished, look.

Now, on the softer side, the pretty, thick glass of Czech druks, untouched by facets, is always a perfect way to showcase a color. In this case, the color, the delicate "Silver Peony", could be showcased in no better way.

Small silver accents separate the druks, while tiny aurora borealis bicones enhance the beads subtle glow and add a bit of rainbow sparkle to the design. These beads would be perfect either as an understated long necklace, or worn close to the neck like a string of pearls.

"Above the bright blue..." we might find some of the colors in these glowing beads.

Opal blue firepolished beads in "Grapemist" are cooler than a spring breeze in this design. The facetted beads are a perfect match for the raised dots or bumps on the dark aqua focal bead. Set off all of the beads with lots of silver accents for an ocean-cool look that easily translates from spring to summer. This design could stand alone as the focal point of a necklace, or be repeated to make an anklet or bracelet. Whatever the length of the design, these colors represent refreshing.
