White and gold top summer color lists

By Bethany Waldrop Keiper

"In marble halls as white as milk; Lined with a skin as soft as silk; Within a fountain crystal-clear; A golden apple doth appear. No doors there are to this stronghold; Yet thieves break in and steal the gold." -- Iona and Peter Opie, comps.

Figuring out fickle fashion's trends can often seem like a riddle, like the quotation above. Since keeping in touch with what is popular for clothing and accessories is vital for jewelry designers, fashion's riddles are important to solve. But for spring and summer of 2006, the forecast for some of the most popular combinations is clearly spelled out for you -- gold, white, and neutrals.

Neutral shades are often being called the "new" neutrals or naturals, but neutrals have always had a place in fashion, only perhaps not to this high of a degree of popularity for the summer. Tan, cream, rich brown, and gold are some of the most popular choices, and these are often paired with white.

If you think about it, what color is more natural than gold? It can be found naturally in the earth -- you just have to poke about for it in the right places. When gold is not metallic in jewelry or in fabric threads, it actually assumes a soft tan color. And cream almost merges into this soft tan and then into gold.

White has always been perfect for summer in several aspects: it happily accompanies almost any color; it provides an aura of cool with its reminder of sugary sands or snows; it is the automatic choice for summertime brides; and it reflects sunlight for comfortable wear.
Large, milky-white teardrop earrings are perfect for these reasons for this season. They have a soft glow and draw attention to your skin -- whether the skin you are showing off is naturally more peaches and cream or more cinnamon and spice. Gold accents give these earrings a finished look.

Go with the fashion flow with this smooth mother-of-pearl beads necklace, accented with dangling drops galore. Start at the very bottom with golden bead caps.

Then add white teardrops with diamond-shaped, hand-painted golden designs, and stack them on top of more white teardrops, and top it all off with sparkling gold Swarovski bicones for a design that can't help but catch the eye. The graduated look is almost tribal and completely in tune with the skinnier and more linear drop designs which are popular for earrings and necklaces this year.

The trend toward gold was woven throughout Milan's fashion week for spring and summer. Cavalli, Chloe, and Versace were three collections featuring the shimmering color. The rich hue has already been popular for red carpet fashions at awards ceremonies this year.

Since soaking up the sun's rays has become outdated, naturally attaining a golden complexion may be impossible if you want to prevent early wrinkles or looking prematurely antiquated. So give yourself and your customers a golden glow from your jewelry designs.

Give the traditional charm bracelet a sun-kissed Midas touch with a gold chain as a base, and alternate intricate small gold hearts with large white hearts, hand painted with lavish gold diagonal stripes. Once again, Swarovski 2X aurum gold bicones are the perfect accents for the large heart focal beads.

To go totally natural and neutral, what color could be better than clear? This nearly-naked disk is the perfect background for the embossed golden scrolls it bears. For a look that is both beautiful and trendy, give the disk a topping of graduated pearly and gold accent beads, and a simple golden earwire.

As you choose the gold-colored findings and accent beads for your designs, be careful. Remember, quality and longevity count. Look at pieces you've created before with the gold findings and beads you have now -- how have they held up? If they look worn or overtly brassy, consider shopping around for an upgrade in your accents.

By the way -- in case you didn't guess already, the riddle at the top of the column is describing an egg, and its official author is Mother Goose. Next month's column will also feature white and cream as we explore pearls, June's birthstone.
