Bali
Beads

Bead Peddler®
Bali beads are made of metal, sterling silver, plate, copper and gold.
Sterling silver is by far the most prominent metal used in making Bali
Beads.
Bali beads originated in India. The Indians taught the Balinese how to
make the beads. The majority of Bali beads today are still made in
India. Some people differentiate between bali and bali style beads. Bali
style beads are made the same way as Bali beads, but do not come from Bali -
instead they come from India.
Bali beads are handmade so there is variation from bead to bead.
 |
First of all, both halves of the
bead are made from a mold. Then the two bead halves are soldered
together. The quality of the soldering will vary a great deal and
'sloppy soldering' lowers the price of the bead. Once the bead is
formed, it is decorated with circles and wires. |
The bead is usually oxidized - made to appear dull and dark. Some believe
the oxidization makes the bead look older.
Sterling Bali beads are sold by weight - in grams. The gram price is
based on the market price of sterling. Not all 'sterling silver' beads
sold in India are sterling - some of them contain only .88 silver. If
you want sterling silver Bali beads, you have to be careful to buy your
beads from a reputable dealer who guarantees the beads to be .925 silver.
